Retell AI Review 2026: Pricing, Strengths, Trade-Offs

Retell AI review: what a real minute costs, what Retell does well, the trade-offs, and who should build on it, from an agency that built on Retell and Vapi.

Retell AI Review 2026: Pricing, Strengths, Trade-Offs

This Retell AI review comes from someone who builds a platform that integrates with Retell, so weigh it with that in mind. I will stick to what Retell publishes and what a real minute costs, and be plain about where it fits.

Retell AI is a developer-friendly voice agent platform with usage pricing from about $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, 20 free concurrent calls, a large choice of models and voices, and add-ons like knowledge bases and denoising. It is a strong pick for building voice agents; the CRM, follow-up and campaigns around the call are yours to build or connect.

My agency built voice agents on both Retell and Vapi while I was scaling it past $50K a month. Here is the review I would want before choosing.

What a Retell minute costs

From retellai.com/pricing, checked 16 October 2026:

LinePrice per minute
Retell voice infrastructure$0.055
Text-to-speech$0.015 (Retell, Cartesia, OpenAI and others) up to $0.10 (ElevenLabs v3 and v4)
Language modelFrom under $0.01 for small models to $0.32 for the largest, e.g. Claude 5 Sonnet at $0.064
Telephony$0.015 on Retell's Twilio numbers; SIP trunking and custom telephony at no charge

Retell's own worked example lands at $0.11 a minute. Its headline range for voice agents is $0.07 to $0.31 a minute.

Add-ons and subscriptions

  • Knowledge base: +$0.005 a minute; 10 knowledge bases free, then $8 per knowledge base a month.
  • Advanced denoising and safety guardrails: +$0.005 a minute each. PII removal: +$0.01.
  • Branded calls: +$0.10 per outbound call. AI quality assurance: first 100 minutes free, then $0.10 a minute.
  • Concurrency: 20 concurrent calls free, then $8 per concurrent call a month.
  • Retell phone numbers: $2 a month.

Billing details worth knowing: calls are billed to the second, silence and hold time are billed, the AI stops billing after a transfer but telephony continues, and failed calls are not billed. New accounts get $10 in free credits.

Where an $0.11 Retell minute goes (Retell's own example)

  • Voice infra$0.055
  • Model$0.040
  • Voice (TTS)$0.015
From retellai.com/pricing, checked 16 October 2026. Telephony and add-ons were $0 in that example.

Three real Retell minutes

The headline range hides how much your choices move the price. Three builds, using Retell's published rates:

BuildInfraModelVoiceTelephonyAdd-onsPer minute
Budget (GPT 5 mini, Retell voice, your own SIP)$0.055$0.008$0.015$0none$0.078
Balanced (Claude 5 Sonnet, Cartesia, Retell's Twilio)$0.055$0.064$0.015$0.015none$0.149
Premium (GPT 5.5, ElevenLabs v3, knowledge base, denoising)$0.055$0.160$0.100$0.015$0.010$0.340

Monthly Retell cost at 2,000 minutes, by build

  • Budget$156
  • Balanced$298
  • Premium$680
2,000 minutes x the per-minute total for each build. Rates from retellai.com/pricing, checked 16 October 2026.

The premium build lands above Retell's own $0.31 upper figure once add-ons are included. The model choice alone moves the minute by 15 cents, so match the model to the job: a booking line rarely needs the largest model.

Costs people forget to model

  • Silence and hold time are billed. A caller who puts the agent on hold is still on the meter.
  • Telephony keeps running after a transfer. The AI stops billing, the phone line does not.
  • Concurrency above 20 is $8 per extra concurrent call a month.
  • Knowledge bases above 10 are $8 each a month.
  • Branded caller ID is $0.10 per outbound call, which adds up on campaigns.
  • AI quality assurance is free for the first 100 minutes, then $0.10 a minute.

What Retell does well

  • Model and voice choice. A long list of language models, including speech-to-speech options, and a wide range of voices, priced per minute so you can trade quality for cost per agent.
  • Generous concurrency. Twenty concurrent calls before you pay for more is enough for most small and mid-sized businesses.
  • Transparent per-second billing, with no charge for failed calls.
  • Integrations, including a native GoHighLevel integration for booking and contact sync.
  • Useful add-ons for denoising, PII removal and quality assurance, so you only pay for what a use case needs.

The trade-offs

  • The voice layer is the product. Retell runs the call. The CRM, the follow-up texts, the workflows and the calling campaigns around the call are things you build or connect.
  • Costs stack per minute. Infrastructure, model, voice, telephony and add-ons each add to the minute. The cheap headline and the real minute can differ by a lot depending on your choices.
  • Concurrency beyond 20 is a monthly line at $8 per concurrent call.

Retell and GoHighLevel

Many agencies look at Retell because they run clients on GoHighLevel. Per Retell's documentation, its GoHighLevel integration connects one sub-account (location) at a time:

  1. Create a Private Integration token in the GoHighLevel sub-account (Settings > Private Integrations), with the contact, opportunity, custom field and calendar scopes.
  2. Copy the Location ID from the sub-account's Business Profile or URL.
  3. Connect it in Retell under Integrations, using the token and Location ID.

Once connected, Retell's calendar tools can check availability, book, reschedule and cancel appointments, and its contact sync can import contacts, write call analysis back and log conversations as notes. Only one CRM can drive contact sync at a time. Starting outbound calls from a GoHighLevel workflow is still something you wire up yourself; the same pattern for Vapi is in how to connect Vapi to GoHighLevel.

Who should build on Retell

Retell fits developers and agencies who want control over models and voices, are comfortable wiring the call into their own CRM and automations, and want predictable per-second usage billing.

Look at a platform instead if you want the call, the CRM, follow-up and campaigns in one place without building the glue. For the head-to-head, read Vapi vs Retell.

Using Retell inside StrideOps

You do not have to choose. In StrideOps you paste your Retell API key and your Retell agents and numbers mirror into StrideOps, ready to run in calling campaigns with calling hours, retries, voicemail drops, do-not-call checks and an outcome on every call. Retell call events can trigger workflows. Two limits to know: Retell tools stay inside Retell (they are not synced), and Retell phone numbers need SIP trunk setup on the Retell side before calls route through them. Your Retell usage stays on your Retell account. See AI calling campaigns.

FAQ

How much does Retell AI cost?

Retell charges per minute, from about $0.07 to $0.31 for voice agents depending on the model, voice and telephony you choose. Its own example comes to $0.11 a minute. New accounts get $10 in free credits.

Is Retell AI safe?

Retell offers add-ons for PII removal and safety guardrails, and is used by businesses in production. As with any voice platform, review its security and compliance documentation against your own requirements.

Is Retell better than Vapi?

They are close competitors. Retell is known for simple per-minute pricing and generous free concurrency; Vapi for developer flexibility. The right pick depends on your stack; see Vapi vs Retell.

Can I use Retell with a CRM?

Yes, through integrations such as its GoHighLevel connection, or by connecting your Retell account to a platform like StrideOps, where Retell agents run in campaigns next to the CRM.

Does Retell charge for silence?

Yes. Retell's pricing FAQ says you are charged during silence and hold time, and calls are billed to the second.

Can I bring my own phone numbers to Retell?

Yes. Retell lists SIP trunking and custom telephony at no charge, or you can use Retell's numbers at $2 a month plus per-minute telephony.

The bottom line

Retell is a solid, transparent voice platform with real model choice and generous concurrency. Price it on the full minute with your chosen model and voice, not the headline, and decide whether you want to build the CRM and follow-up around it or run your Retell agents inside a platform that already has them.

Keep your Retell agents. Add everything around the call.

Connect your Retell account and run your agents in campaigns with calling hours, retries, voicemail drops and an outcome on every call.
