How to Auto DM Instagram Comments (Comment-to-DM Setup)

How to auto DM Instagram comments: the account you need, how keyword comment-to-DM works, the setup step by step, and how to turn commenters into leads.

How to Auto DM Instagram Comments (Comment-to-DM Setup)

Here is how to auto DM Instagram comments, the way most creators and brands now hand out links: "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to you." Every comment boosts the post, every DM delivers the link, and every commenter becomes someone you can follow up with.

To auto DM Instagram comments, connect an Instagram Business or Creator account to a comment-to-DM tool, pick a post and a keyword, then write a public reply and a private DM. When someone comments the keyword, they get the reply and the DM automatically.

On my own new Instagram account, keyword comment campaigns pulled in 4,297 keyword comments in the first two months. Here is the setup, step by step.

What you need first

  • An Instagram Business or Creator account. Comment-to-DM automation runs through Meta's official messaging access, which personal accounts do not have.
  • A tool connected through Meta. Use an automation tool that connects through Meta's official connection, so you are not risking your account with scrapers or bots that log in as you.
  • Something worth DMing. A guide, a template, a discount or a booking link. The DM has to pay off the comment.

How comment-to-DM works

One keyword comment, start to finish

Someone comments the keyword

On the post or reel you picked

instantly

Public reply

Posted under their comment

instantly

Private DM with your link

Optional follow gate and buttons

on reply

Saved as a contact

Ready for follow-up

The public reply shows other viewers the automation is real, which drives more comments. The DM delivers the payoff. Saving the commenter as a contact is the step most setups skip, and it is where the money is.

Set it up step by step

  1. Pick the post. Start with a reel or carousel you will promote, or your best-performing recent post.
  2. Pick one keyword. Short, unusual and easy to spell: GUIDE, PLAYBOOK, SCRIPT. Avoid common words people type anyway.
  3. Write the public reply. One line: "Sent, check your DMs." Write two or three variations so the replies do not look copy-pasted.
  4. Write the DM. Thank them, deliver the link, and ask one question that starts a conversation.
  5. Decide on a follow gate. You can require a follow before the link is sent. It grows followers, at the cost of some drop-off.
  6. Add a follow-up. People open DMs late. A short follow-up if they have not clicked recovers a share of them.
  7. Say the keyword in the post. On screen and in the caption: "Comment GUIDE." If people do not know the keyword, nothing triggers.

Turn commenters into leads

A link in a DM is the start. What happens next decides whether the campaign made money:

  • Answer replies. When someone replies with a question, an AI DM agent can answer it in the DMs instead of leaving it unread.
  • Follow up in the right channel. A commenter who asks about pricing should hear back by text, email or a call, not get another DM blast.
  • Track it. Comments, DMs sent and link clicks per campaign tell you which posts and offers actually pull.

Three DM templates that convert

Free resource:

Here's the guide you asked for: [link]. Quick question so I can send you the right next thing: are you just getting started, or already doing [topic]?

Event or webinar:

You're in. Here's the registration link: [link]. It's live on [day] at [time]. Want a reminder the day before?

Booking a call:

Thanks for commenting. Here's the link to grab a free 15-minute call: [link]. If none of the times work, reply here and I'll find one.

Each delivers the payoff in the first line and asks one question that starts a conversation.

Mistakes that kill comment campaigns

  1. A keyword people type anyway. "Yes" or "info" triggers on comments that were not asking for anything.
  2. No public reply. Viewers cannot see the automation is real, so fewer comment.
  3. A follow gate on every campaign. It grows followers, but test it: on some offers it costs more clicks than it gains.
  4. No follow-up. People open DMs late; one reminder recovers a share of them.
  5. Dead ends. If the commenter replies with a question and nobody answers, the lead goes cold in the DMs.

What to measure per campaign

  • Keyword comments on the post.
  • DMs sent and link clicks.
  • Replies to the DM, a sign the conversation started.
  • Contacts that became leads or customers after the DM.

How this works in StrideOps Engage

Engage is the comment-to-DM side of StrideOps. Pick a post, set the keyword and write the reply; when someone comments the keyword, Engage posts a public reply under the post and sends a private DM with your link. You can add a follow gate, buttons and a sequence that follows up if they do not click.

Every commenter lands in your StrideOps CRM as a contact, and contacts are unlimited on every plan, so a post that takes off does not push you into a higher contact tier. Instagram comments, DMs, story replies and follows can all trigger workflows, so a commenter can get your AI text agent or an AI call next. The AI DM agent answers questions right in the DMs.

Engage also covers DM flows with buttons, sequences, broadcasts, audiences, growth tools (ref links, story replies, conversation starters, a persistent menu, opt-in and opt-out), and conversions and analytics. It connects through a native Meta connection or through Zernio.

My own Engage dashboard shows 202 campaigns, 1,511 DMs sent and 1,930 clicks. See the full picture on the ManyChat alternative page.

FAQ

How do I turn on auto DM for Instagram comments?

Switch to an Instagram Business or Creator account, connect it to a comment-to-DM tool through Meta, choose a post and a keyword, then write the public reply and the DM. Comments with the keyword trigger both automatically.

Can I auto DM comments on a personal Instagram account?

No. Comment-to-DM automation needs an Instagram Business or Creator account, because it runs through Meta's official messaging access. Switching account type is free in Instagram's settings.

Is comment-to-DM automation allowed on Instagram?

Yes, when it runs through Meta's official connection. Tools that scrape or log in as you instead can put your account at risk.

What is a good keyword for comment-to-DM?

A short, distinctive word tied to what you are sending, such as GUIDE or SCRIPT. Avoid everyday words that people might type without wanting the DM.

Does comment-to-DM work on reels?

Yes. Comment campaigns can run on reels and posts. Reels with "comment [keyword]" on screen and in the caption are the most common setup.

Can I auto DM people who comment on old posts?

Yes, you can run a comment campaign on an existing post. It works best on posts still getting views, such as a pinned reel or a post you are promoting.

The bottom line

Comment-to-DM turns your best posts into a lead form people actually want to fill out. Pick one keyword, deliver something worth the comment, and make sure every commenter lands somewhere you can follow up. That last step is the difference between engagement and revenue.

Comment a keyword, get the DM, land in the CRM

Comment campaigns, follow gates, DM flows and an AI DM agent, with every commenter saved as a contact and unlimited contacts on every plan.
