How Much to Charge for AI Voice Agent Services

How much to charge for AI voice agent services: the four pricing models, how to find your cost floor, and how to keep usage from eating margin.

How Much to Charge for AI Voice Agent Services

Ask ten agencies how much to charge for AI voice agent work and you get ten answers, most of them guesses. The guess is not the problem. The problem is pricing without knowing your cost floor, then discovering in month three that one busy client is losing you money.

Charge for an AI voice agent with a one-time setup fee plus a monthly retainer, and pass voice usage through with a markup. Set the retainer from the client's value, never below your cost floor: platform share, usage and the hours you spend maintaining the agent.

I scaled my own AI agency past $50K a month selling AI systems to clients. Below is a pricing structure built to hold up once you have more than a handful of them.

The four pricing models

ModelHow it worksWorks whenWatch out for
Setup fee onlyOne payment to build the agentNever on its ownYou maintain it for free forever
Per minuteBill every call minute at a marked-up rateHigh, predictable volumeClients start limiting calls to save money, which kills results
Monthly retainerFixed monthly fee for the agent and its upkeepMost clientsA volume spike can wipe out the margin unless usage is separate
Pay per resultA fee per booked appointment or qualified leadYou control lead quality and the calendarDisputes over what counts as a result

The structure that holds up combines them: setup fee + monthly retainer + usage passed through with a markup. The setup fee pays for the build. The retainer pays for prompt updates, testing and reporting. Usage scales with the client's own volume, so a busy month is good news for both of you.

Find your cost floor first

Before you quote a price, know what one client costs you to serve.

Platform share

On the StrideOps Agency plan, the platform is $599 a month and covers 5 client organizations, so a full plan works out to about $120 per client per month. It also includes $150 of usage credits a month across the account.

Voice usage

Usage is the line that moves. On StrideOps, voice calls are metered as usage credits based on the real cost of each call, so you can see exactly what every client's calls cost and rebill them. If you build on a voice platform like Vapi, add its per-minute platform fee and the provider costs underneath it; see Vapi pricing for how those stack up.

Your time

This is the cost agencies forget. Prompt changes, new FAQs, testing after every change, monthly reporting and the occasional "the agent said something weird" call. Estimate your hours per client per month honestly and price them at your hourly rate.

Set the retainer from value, not cost

The cost floor is the minimum, not the price. The price comes from what the agent is worth to the client:

  • Answered calls that used to go to voicemail. How many calls a month did they miss, and what is one booked job worth?
  • Hours the front desk gets back. Repetitive calls the agent now handles.
  • After-hours coverage. Leads that arrive at night and on weekends.

Price the retainer at a fraction of that value, and well above the cost floor. If the value does not clear the floor by a wide margin, the client is not a fit for a voice agent yet.

Rebill usage so spikes never eat your margin

The fastest way to lose money on a voice agent is to bundle unlimited minutes into a flat fee. One client runs an outbound campaign and your margin is gone.

Pass usage through instead, with a markup that covers the platform and your risk. On the StrideOps Agency plan you rebill each client through Stripe at the price you set: you pay StrideOps for the platform and keep the margin. Each client gets their own workspace under your brand and domain, and you choose which features each one sees.

What to put in the proposal

  1. The outcome, in the client's numbers. Calls answered, appointments booked, hours saved.
  2. What the setup includes. Knowledge base, voice, call flow, calendar connection, testing.
  3. What the retainer includes. Monthly updates, testing after changes, a monthly report.
  4. How usage is billed. The rate, how it is measured, and how the client can see it.
  5. What is out of scope. New agents, new phone numbers or new integrations are quoted separately.

Pricing is one part of selling. For the rest, Stride AI Academy, our community for AI agency owners, covers how to sell AI voice agents to local businesses, AI automation agency pricing across all services, and what to put in the contract.

FAQ

How much should I charge for an AI voice agent?

Charge a one-time setup fee, a monthly retainer set from the value the agent creates for the client, and voice usage passed through with a markup. Never price the retainer below your cost floor of platform share, usage and your time.

Should I charge per minute for AI voice agents?

Per-minute pricing works for high, predictable volume, but on its own it encourages clients to limit calls. Most agencies do better with a retainer for the agent and usage billed separately with a markup.

How much do AI voice agents cost to run?

Running costs are a per-minute mix of speech-to-text, the language model, text-to-speech and phone charges, plus the platform fee. The total depends on the providers you choose and the client's call volume.

Can I white-label AI voice agents for clients?

Yes. On the StrideOps Agency plan, clients use your brand and domain, each client has their own isolated workspace, and you rebill them through Stripe at your own margin.

The bottom line

Know your cost floor, price the retainer from the client's value, and never give away unlimited minutes. That structure survives busy months, new clients and price changes from your providers. If you are setting up the agency itself, read how to start a white-label AI agency and see the Agency plan.
