Learning how to find outlier videos on YouTube is the fastest way to a video idea that already worked, on a channel where it should not have. That is an outlier: a video that pulled far more views than the channel usually gets.
To find outlier videos on YouTube, compare each video's views with the median views of that channel's recent uploads. A video at 2x the median is noteworthy, 5x is strong and 10x is exceptional. The idea or packaging behind it is what to study.
I have spent three years teaching AI on YouTube, with over 5M views, and packaging is most of that game. Here is the outlier method, by hand and automated.
What counts as an outlier
Raw views lie. A million views is ordinary on a giant channel and extraordinary on a small one. An outlier is measured against the channel itself:
Outlier multiplier = this video's views / the median views of the channel's recent uploads
Use the median, not the average. One viral video drags the average up and hides every other outlier on the channel.
Example: a channel whose recent uploads have a median of 10,000 views
- Typical upload10,000 views (1x)
- Noteworthy20,000 views (2x)
- Strong50,000 views (5x)
- Exceptional100,000 views (10x)
The free manual method
- Pick 10 to 20 channels in your niche. Include small ones. Small channels produce the cleanest outliers because their audience did not carry the video; the idea did.
- Open each channel's Videos tab and look at the last 20 to 30 uploads.
- Find the median views. Sort the view counts and take the middle one.
- Divide each video's views by the median. Anything at 2x or more goes on your list. Note the title, the thumbnail and the topic.
- For very recent videos, use views per hour. A video posted yesterday cannot compete on total views yet. Views per hour since upload shows which new videos are breaking out early.
- Look for repeats. One outlier is luck. The same topic or format breaking out on three channels is a signal.
It works, and it takes an evening for twenty channels. Then the data is stale a week later.
What to take from an outlier
Do not copy the video. Find out why it won:
- The topic. Was it a subject the channel rarely covers? A new tool, a new problem?
- The packaging. Title and thumbnail are most of the click. What promise did they make?
- The format. A tutorial, a teardown, a challenge, a comparison?
- The timing. Did it ride a news moment that has already passed?
Then make your version: your angle, your proof, your audience.
A worked example
Illustrative numbers for one small channel in your niche:
| Video | Views | Channel median | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| "I tried X for 30 days" | 48,000 | 8,000 | 6x |
| "Beginner's guide to X" | 9,500 | 8,000 | 1.2x |
| "X vs Y: which is better?" | 21,000 | 8,000 | 2.6x |
| Weekly update #42 | 6,100 | 8,000 | 0.8x |
Two outliers. The 6x video is a challenge format with a clear time frame; the 2.6x video is a comparison. If you see the same two formats breaking out on other channels in your niche, that is a pattern worth making your version of.
Turn an outlier into your video
- Write down the promise, not the title: what does the viewer expect to get?
- Find your angle: your experience, your data, a different audience or a newer version of the same idea.
- Keep the format, change the substance. A "30 days" challenge can be yours with your own test.
- Package it first. Write three titles and sketch the thumbnail before you script; if the packaging is weak, the video will be too.
- Check freshness. If the outlier rode a news moment, make sure the moment is still alive.
Outliers beyond YouTube
The same method works on Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook: compare each post to the creator's median and look for patterns across creators. Short-form outliers move faster, so check them weekly rather than monthly.

- Pick creators you already track in Discover, or paste channel and post URLs you do not track yet. It covers YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook.
- It scrapes recent uploads and computes the outlier multiplier against that creator's median, then ranks the cards, labelled 2x+ noteworthy, 5x+ strong and 10x+ exceptional, with views per hour.
- Filter by multiplier (any, 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x and up) to see only the real breakouts.

Scans are billed as usage credits based on what each scan returns, including transcript scrapes for eligible YouTube videos.
FAQ
What is an outlier video on YouTube?
An outlier video is one that gets far more views than its channel normally does, usually measured as a multiple of the median views of the channel's recent uploads. A video at 2x or more is worth studying.
How do you find YouTube outliers for free?
Open a channel's Videos tab, take the median views of its last 20 to 30 uploads, and divide each video's views by that median. Anything at 2x or more is an outlier. Repeat across 10 to 20 channels in your niche.
What is a good outlier score?
A 2x outlier is noteworthy, 5x is strong and 10x is exceptional. Patterns matter more than one score: the same topic breaking out on several channels is the strongest signal.
Should I copy outlier videos?
No. Study why the video won (topic, packaging, format, timing), then make your own version with your angle and your proof. Copying the video gets you the idea without the reason it worked.
How often should I look for outliers?
Weekly for short-form and monthly for long-form is a good rhythm. Keep a running list, because the patterns that repeat across weeks matter more than any single breakout.
Do outliers work for small channels?
Yes, and small channels are often the best place to find them. A small creator's breakout says more about the idea, because their audience was not big enough to carry it on its own.
Should I only copy formats from my niche?
Start there, but formats travel. A challenge or comparison format that breaks out in one niche can often be adapted to yours.
The bottom line
Outliers are the closest thing YouTube has to a free focus group. Measure against the channel's median, look for patterns across channels, and make your own version of what won. When doing it by hand gets slow, let the content studio scan for you.
Find what broke out, then make your version
Scan the creators you track for outliers against their own median, filter for the real breakouts and turn one into a script draft.
